I’ve studied crows feeding in the 200 acre pumpkin patch and arrange my decoys in the same manner. I believe I’m doing it correctly because Mr. crow and his accomplices land with the decoys.

It is pretty cool when you see them landing in your spread and knowing you outsmarted a wise bird. My question is, how many are landing sunny side up in the decoys.

Ok, I'm with you except for the hoppers? Why don't you count them?

Terrell,

I've never worried about how decoys are arranged and I don't think the crows do either. I pay more attention to where they are in relation to the blind. We do retrieve outliers if time permits and toss them in the kill zone.

If they hit the ground after being hit I count them.

Do you count each separate piece? You might be inflating your TBC due to your choice of arms.

Lol, I’ve chased a hopper 600 yards down hill through briers, he kept Cawing and birds would hang up. I bailed out of the blind, in a foot of snow. Off I went on a wild Goose chase. I had BBs with me and put an end to him. But when I arrived at his location a was suprised he was in front of the dead fall I knocked him off of. Then I discovered there were 2! As I returned to the blind another just woke up. I’m the worst shot I know. So away I went, round and round and round a giant Red oak. There were some feathers left. So I gave up on counting Hoppers. Hey coach put me in the game!!!

Randy,

I was lucky enough this year to have this problem and it is a good problem to have.  The first time Colt and I got ourselves in position to really drop a good number of crows, I noticed after about 30 birds on the ground that the new arrivals where hanging up a little to far out.  I said to my self, ahhh I know what's going on and with a big grin I ran out and picked up the outliers and commenced to plugging away again.

Dale,

In the film clip series #12 where it is set to marching band music you will see perhaps 100 crows or more close to the blind. Those were the ones that I retrieved that dropped to far down wind so I picked them up and moved them in closer to my blind. I'm quite sure you have watched it on you tube.

Hey, the wheat field hunt with my wife back in 1983 that you mentioned to me on your visit last week I got to thinking that I was just about your age when I made that video. I will be 71 on the 26th of this month, time sure fly's when you remain active.

Talking about being active, one of my pool playing friends has a son that is 55 years old. This poor guy has had the worst luck of anyone I know! He was due for an operation to amputate one of his legs at the knee for diabetes. So the poor bastard is on an electric cart cause he can't walk and the cart drops into a chuck hole and when he hit the ground he broke his hip! So now he has to take care of his hip before they cut off his leg! The moral of this horror story is this, no matter how bad your crow shooting may get on any given day you are way ahead of the game if you have your health!

Terrell,

Just type in my name on any search engine and you will see many film clips on crow hunting. Series # 12 is a special one of many on you tube. Check out "The Arkansas River Crow Hunt" or "Hunting Those Cagey Crows"

I have to say the music in the first video did nothing for me, it was better with the sound turned off.

#12 video is a true Crowpocalypse!

The afternoon shot you are set up and calling them perfectly. I loved the way you call them back. But then you are the master.

What call is playing,Excited Crows?

Does anyone know how to download Johnny Stewart Pray Master sounds to a FoxPro? I’m sure it can be done. This will lighten my load walking into the field.

Ill need a step by step guide as I am computer illiterate.

Thank you for sharing, I picked up valuable information on the two videos.

Hi NH,

I think most folks would agree with you but I added the marching band music to add a little more drama to the production. I just wanted to do this one differently.

Thank you for posting these two clips, I got my birthday present by you doing the posting of the film clips. I'm 71 today.

Happy Birthday Bob, I assume you edited these videos a long time ago.

Hi Pete,

In order to have a production that will hold peoples attention you have to edit out all the time in between shots sometimes or your audience will drop off into a coma! The segment with the marching band music was not edited, I had to find a segment of film that ran the same length as the music which was no easy task years ago.

That film footage was shot somewhere between 1994 and 1996. Series # 12.

Terrell,

Two other clips that you will enjoy (hand calling) are "Hunting those Cagey Crows" and "Hunting the Greatest Avian Marauder, the Crow"

Terrell,

Did you catch the two crows killed with one shot right at the end of "Afternoon Flyway Crow Shoot" ? That was very lucky to have captured that on video tape!

I'm quite sure you caught that Pete.

I did not the Double, now my internet is slow and won’t download the video. I’ll return to the post and rewatch the videos. I appreciate the fact you take great interest in other post and educate us in all forms of this sport. Blind location plays a large roll in a successful hunt. When I scout a new location I need to walk it out and not toatally rely on Goggle Earth.

Terrell,

If you want to find the best spot to shoot from you have to walk the area out in order to evaluate where that place is located. Don't get hemmed in by over hanging tree limbs where you can't get a shot!

Biggest rookie mistake ever. Many a crows life has been spared by the mindset that good overhead cover will be an advantage. I like to get them to fly over some taller cover and into an opening or creek bed with clear airspace above.

     Gentlemen

With overhead cover I’m reducing my fireing zone to 35%, then I must calculate right handed shooting, wind direction, wind speed, bird direction approach, bird distance, that leaves me with a 5% or less shooting window. Now that I think about all the Verables. I’m getting my coffee ready and walking out the door to scout Fridays location and blind set up.

The Goose blind is going to be my best bet then. Which is C!

If those crows have been shot very much during the season I would be very skeptical of the C location. Let me know how many fade off before they get into range?

I walked it out as the Crows were on their daily routine. A location is totally wrong as they fly in they stay at tree top height, which is out of gun range regardless of which side your on.  C location is totally wrong as is 100 yards from their staging feed area. And no cover, but they are flying at gun range level in the bottom. Location B is the ideal location. As I built the blind they flew in and out never called regarding my activity. No one has ever hunted them here. 7am 7:20,7:40,8:00, 8:26, 8:40,9:10 is their flight pattern coming and going.  Here are a few photos from the barn, location A to location B and blind set up, and bird flight patterns. Thank you for the

The reason I was skeptical of the wide open C location was because when you have your e-caller going they have to much time to look things over "before they get into range" and the smart ones will fade off knowing it's a phony setup!

Woke up this morning and 3-4 inches of snow, well another rookie mistake. Off I went , 6:13 Crows Caws from every direction. It was brilliant white so they woke up early. I head to the blind and Crows are flying, it 6:30 ! I set up and wait and listen and watched. The locals are headed out , where are they headed? I google earth and there’s another chicken house 1/2 mile away! Ok it’s 20degrees no wind they are gone, Crows come and go but follow all the tree lines. Here’s what happened. Yellow is Crows

Blue is Crow flyway

I had two just beyond my gun range, so I never fired a shot. The weather forecast has changed again. And 3 more inches of snow. Sunday the farmer doesn’t allow hunting. And it’s going to snow. So I’ll have to wait until next week.

It’s Sunday, the Amish will not allow hunting on the sabbath.  I’ve educated the Crows on the “ English “ farms here . But there are 2 gun shows near by Today. Hopefully I’ll find something. I picked up 200 rounds of 12 gauge shells for $30 at the last show. I can’t have enough shotgun shells.

Terrell,

It was just dumb luck to capture that on video.
