A Productive Dove Hunt

Yesterday I got a short-notice invitation for a dove hunt on nearby Wadmalaw Island, which is 11 miles from our island, straight line, but a 45 minute drive by road. My next door neighbor brought me to a small farm where the owner reported doves coming in to corn stubble. This was an unorganized hunt with only 5 hunters.

The hunting was slow, so long shots were in order. Had I known how slow it would be, I would have brought my 12 gauge instead of the 28 ga. I did a lot of walking looking for downed birds and ended up with 5 doves. The most satisfying shot, however, was not a dove.

At one point after unsuccessfully looking for a dove that went down, I hid in an irrigation ditch for cover. Looking up a few minutes later, I saw a single crow coming my way as he was headed for a tree line behind me...what a mistake!!  He came so close that I could see his black eye as I pulled the trigger. Not only did he hit the ground with a thud, but as I walked over to pick him up, I found the dove I was looking for earlier!

The best part was that after the hunt the dead crow started a conversation about crow damage and one of the hunters was a local farmer with a crow problem in a nearby field. He hates crows and wants me to help him out!

To be continued,

Demi

Doves drove you in a ditch to hide from them but instead you were able to ambush a crow inadvertently  fell over one of the doves you could not find that started a conversation about a crow infestation elsewhere that needs your attention! Fate!!!!

I hope that there's a photo since I am excited to see the targets and the outcome of this hunting.

Also, I did go crow hunting with my dog to test if this new garmin astro works.
