Colt and I hunted a place that is close to the house this morning. This was the third time it has been hunted so I didn’t expect a giant kill. Just some time in the blind with Colt. I called pretty softly most of the mornin, mainly calling when I seen new birds coming into the general area. The birds that came in did so like they had never heard an electronic call and came in full tilt. Made for some fun shooting for sure.
Colt did commit one of the most awful of sins this morning. The shooting had been steady and in comes another bird floating right over the blind, he pulls up and “CLICK”, no bang, no fire???? Was this a bad round? I sat there wondering as the crow flew out of range and no worse for the ware. No bad round was the cause, he had ran out of ammunition! After some quick instruction on the importance of having a bullet in your gun, we continued the hunt. Haha.
We killed an even 40. Colt accounted for 18 and myself 22. Outside of the ammunition problem he gave them hell. I forgot my phone so I didn’t get any pictures.

For the most part it was pretty easy shooting, all shots were taken inside 40 yards and where most passing shots. That being said he does shoot well. He has out shot a good friend of mine every time he has been haha.

Great hunt story and commentary Dale. I'm guilty of the same being running my shotgun dry during a sustained shoot. A Model 12 pump will hold 6 in the mag and one in the chamber. Never shoot that puppy dry right? Couple times a year I raise my shotgun put the bead in front of some poor crow and "CLICK" Damn! luckiest crow in Canada.

Ted, I took my model 12 16 gauge with on my hunt with Dale. After a substandard evening shoot with my semi-auto i told Dale i was only bringing the model 12 with on the next morning's hunt. He said as long as you can drop em with it i don't care. Needless to say i was a bit nervous since my shooting the evening before was a bit disappointing. While Dale was putting decoy's in the tree's & it was still a little dark out we had an early incomer, I told Dale to freeze & i dropped him about 20 yard's out , then we turned the caller on & the next few fell. That was a moral booster ! Then we got rained out for a while but i think i ended up with 30 down with the model 12. Big difference going from the auto to the pump but i realy do like the model 12. Just like your's, 6 in the tube & 1 in the chamber. Just a bit more expensive to shoot being a 16 gauge. Paul.
Dale, you & your boy will be busting each others chops for many years. I still do it with my dad. I'll be 40 in June and he will be 67 later this month. On average he can generally out shoot me at the gun club but I have a little advantage in the field because I can twist/shift/move in a blind a little better than he can. I took this video with the intention of busting his chops on a nearly missed bird. Sorry, it was filmed with my phone and filmed vertically. Not ideal but you get the picture.
Im sure others have similar stories about their fathers/sons.

Man, I love watching crows meet their end at the hands of a crow hunter. I did not know you could load a video on the site! I am gonna try my hand at getting some phone footage now to put on the site. When Colt gets big enough to swing a 12 g he will start creeping up on me. He is still to small to swing one just yet.
By the way, it is my belief that a guy deserves some amount of “chop busting” for an almost missed crow. So, it is my opinion your dad deserved some lip haha.

Paul, I shoot a M12 16 occasionally but ammo is fierce expensive up here and selection poor. My 16 gauge started its life back in 1956 as a plain Jane full choke field grade but I had the choke worked on and opened to a light modified. Very good move as it had little collector value. Only pump gun that points like a Model 12 is a Winchester 97 in my opinion. Some say pumps are obsolete and that's fine. When I shoot an auto I find ammo consumption to increase greatly and the kill to increase only slightly. Guess its the way I shoot as I shoot solo much of the time and pick plum shots. Keep em falling gentlemen )

Got it, the main problem I have had with the filming process is that if I have my phone or other filming device in my hands that means my scatter gun is setting in the corner of the blind. Naturally this means that crows may have the chance to escape and I just haven’t been able to come to terms with that. The thought of one crow getting away that should not have, takes a large toll on my psychy. Just ask Paul, I may have some serious issues bahaha.

I'm glad to still be putting one foot in front of the other when you said your dad will be 67 soon; I'm older than your father! Dick is 85 and going like the Durecell Bunny, I think I am hunting with the immortal !
There was a slight breeze that morning. Very little but juuust enough to keep the birds working the correct half of the set up.
Oh yeah, he still enjoys a fine cigar. Not often, but wing shooting & ice fishing seem to bring out his desire to enjoy the finer things in life....like a good cigar. :)

You have inspired me, or it could be said you cost me some money. I have a gopro on the way and hopefully Paul and I's next hunt I will have it and be able to get some footage of us two clowns for you guys.
