At 500 for the season after a good new year's hunt !

I decided to take advantage of a windy forecast for today & got out before daylight at a spot near some pecans & a picked corn field. I got a surprise at first light when i heard a lot of crows a few hundred yards behind me followed by several shotgun blast's ! Is there another crow hunter here ? I didn't hear any calling going on, then i dropped a couple that were coming into my decoy's. Then i heard several more shot's which was definitely two shooters. At this point i suspected that i was going to be lucky to get 5 or 6 if there are other hunter's in the area. And i was sure they probably had the bird's educated. So i turned on some Johnny Stewart at low volume and to my surprise i had a lot of taker's. I never did hear any more gunshot's. I ended up with 42 on the clicker after 4 hours & then it got real slow so i decided to pack up. While i was picking up bird's i saw an incomer so i jumped back in the blind & hit the mute button real quick & Johnny screamed back to life. He was committed & that was number 43 for the day. When i got home i added that to this season's total & that put me at an even 500. Not a bad new year's day hunt. Still have no idea what the gunshot's were about ?? Paul.

500 is better than a lot of guys do during there season.

Spoke to Dale about 8 days ago and he loves the A-400 Beretta I sold him last spring. He said he loves the Briley choke tubes that came with the gun. I liked both the Improved Modified and the Full Choke tubes.

Goose shooting would account for all the shooting but they are limited so whosoever likely limited out. Had the same deal years ago....when the shooting stopped I set up and for what it is worth  got maybe eight total....bird watchers were making their way counting birds so I had to  quit for about an hour eating lunch...it was a pretty good day for what I had to work with. Until I found better which this year was totally unproductive due to no activity and distant hawk(?) versus crow fights out there  somewhere to far away to bother with me....add rain and wqhile the rain wasn't terribly bad it was  worth it for the lack of crows that day that apparently dropped by in NOvember….from all accounts but I wasn't out looking. I figured they blew by already. And so it goes!

I've been sticking with my modified choke, i still end up with to many hopper's.  When we get into fish crow's the full choke can some times be necessary since they can be high flyer's depending on the situation. And yes, Dale is a crow killing machine with the A-400.  When we are hunting together i'm happy to get 80% of his numbers. Paul

With the lack of crows in Paul's home range, this is some really, really good numbers. He is in what I consider a crow desert compared to my area. Well done Paul, and thanks for the kind words, deserved or not haha.

Paul,

Wish I could report a number like that for the year. You are almost 200 birds in front of me! Our season continues, but so do the other distractions. Good post.

Demi, if i'm ahead of you that just proves I've finally learned to speak their lingo as you once told me, and that makes me feel pretty good. What i learned is that i needed to quit wasting my time chasing 2 & 3 around my local area & travel to where there are realy some good numbers. That and being able to hit what you shoot at is a must. I'm still need to fine tune the second part of that. lol.

Demi, it appears your fish crow's have infiltrated the central part of Oklahoma by an article i was reading. Only in limited numbers. I've seen a few here, or rather heard a few. That beep sound they make is a tell tale sigh of a fish crow. You need to keep those guy's in your neck of the wood's ! They don't make for the easiest of target's. Paul.

That's good work Paul. You're definitely making the most of what you have in the immediate area, then traveling to bolster your numbers. To me, the sign of a guy who really likes to shoot crows. Keep after 'em.

Randy
