Good Hunt to Start Season

With things being extremely busy at work, scouting and hunting crows have been on the back burner…until this week!  On Wednesday I scouted out six orchards or dove fields and found a couple with crows. Saturday was the day, so calling around I caught a friend and his daughter practicing sporting clays for her high school shooting team. They jumped at the chance!  We were headed to a small pecan orchard that had bandits stealing the owner’s crop.

The morning started off well and remained strong up until 10:30 AM. All of us were connecting with the crows who cooperated by coming in low and hot!  We had a good blind so we had virtually no flaring. Cleaning up, we ended 88 crows on the clicker/counter. The mix was about 50/50 Common & Fish Crows.

Our good count was secondary to watching a stellar Father-Daughter event!  They will be talking about this hunt for years to come!  Photos show A) Inside our blind. B) All smiles over the tally! C) Kill zone and blind.

Good report, especially about introducing them to something that they had never experienced before in their lives ! A lasting memory with Demi !

Your photo reminds me of the way Jerry Tomlin used to set up his photo ops. He has been gone 3 years already!

Demi, I’d agree that’s a good start.

 Bob,

I’m guessing the similarities come from the fact that I hunted with Jerry for almost 15 years!!  Learned a lot from him. Boy, do I miss him still.

I only met Jerry one tome in Tennessee at a crow tournament. This was back in the mid to late 1980's.

We teamed up the second day of the tournament and each one of us got a Remington model 870 12 gauge as a prize.

Indeed a good start Demi. Thanks for the report and pictures. Keep after 'em.

Demi: I did not see your battery powered "flapper" in your decoy display! Probably did not see it...but what a BEAUTIFUL PLACE ...to set up and harvest a fine bunch!!

Skip,

Good catch as my FF5 Flapper was not in the first picture (but you can see it if you blow up the last pix).  Usually is, but the guy I was hunting with was very energetic and took it (and my customary decoy) away before picture time.  Having said that, my unit started acting up as I couldn't get it to operate via my iPhone app that usually controls the timing, speed, etc.

Called Nick in England who said that the app is no longer supported by Apple due to the high cost for a very small market.  Instead, he sent me a remote control button and new controller to swap out.  Sounds like the same setup as yours.  Will be switching things as soon as I can and will give you an update then.  Hope you are doing well!

Demi
