While out in the yard a couple days ago, I heard some nearby crows suddenly give the warning/alarm calls, so I turned around. To my delight, I saw a small group of low flying crows that included one locked in a death grip and tumbling with a Red Tailed Hawk! They were twirling around about 30' off the ground, heading down with about 5 other crows circling.
The hawk's victim finally broke loose about 10' from the ground and with that, the hawk made an exit. The freed crow is probably still licking his wounds!
I would have loved to see the hawk get his meal, but it was a terrific scene nonetheless. The only consolation is that there will be one more target for me when crow season opens!

It's always interesting to see the struggle for survival. Especially when it involves our quarry.
Those types of battles, though quite common, are rarely witnessed by those who spend time outdoors and pay attention. They're never seen by those who walk around with their head down, fixated on a hand held object they're constantly poking at.
