What constriction does everyone recomend? Will be using 7 and 8 shot high brass out of a mossberg 9200.

I do well with a light modified choke, I will change to a full choke if necessary when they stay high flyers. My partner uses a full choke all times even on close up shots but he's a heck of a shot unlike myself so I want that bigger pattern. Paul.

Pretty hard to go wrong with a modified, for birds and clays.

Be sure to pattern test your gun/choke tube, no matter what they are marked, no matter what the constriction until you put patterns on paper (30" circle at 40 yards) you have no idea what your gun is doing. I could give plenty of examples of chokes/barrels marked one thing that deliver a totally different pattern.

Jeff,

NH gives good advice. Also, different loads through the same barrel/choke can vary widely. Give each load you pattern a hand full of shots through each choke before jumping to any conclusions.

Pete has good advice just because it says modified or light modified does not mean that is what pattern it will throw.

I shoot a pair of Beretta's (semi autos) and both modified chokes pattern like a full choke at 40 yards! Both barrels like 7 1/2's and 8's real well. Both guns do not pattern 6's well at all.

I kinda go between a light modified and a improve modified. Depending on how the birds are working. I have been thinking of just screwing a modified in and leave it. Pattern your gun no matter what load like they said above. I had a franchi o/u that **** #5s a foot low in the bottom barrel no matter which choke or what brand shell. 4s and 6s shot point of aim perfectly. Weird but true.

I took Dales advice and got a Briley extended full choke. With 1 1/8 #6 field load it will. Get the high flying fish crows consistently @ 50 yards (lead comes in at this range also). Also shoot a Beretta A400 with Kickoff.

Definitely depends on the season. Spring cover is poor and crows have been shot at a lot. I usually shoot mod or full. Summer/fall cover is really good, crows are soft and IC or light mod get er done like a charm! Ted
