Saturday Morning With My Boy
(Preview)
Went out for crow with the Master Saturday morning. Took a bit of C4 to get an 11 year old out of bed at zero dark thirty but the effort was well worth watching my son knock crows from the sky with his 410. Morning started "bluebird" clear and frosty. Had good numbers of crows entering the kill zo...

Gun training
(Preview)
Finally after 10 years of my wife just going to the range and just shooting at targets with her pistol, I got to watch my son teach her how to defend herself in actual scenario's (drawing from purse and shooting and other concealed carry options). We've been married 35 yrs and it took 25yrs to convince h...

Sniping Crows
(Preview)
Not enough crows up here yet to warrant a shotgun hunt but had a bit of fun sniping some early migrants yesterday. Set up my caller at the base of a big old oak and let it do it's magic. Sunrise brought a few visitors which circled and kicked up a fuss. A few would land up top the oak and look down to find the sour...

Stellar Morning
(Preview)
Out again at first light, cold crisp and frosty. Shot from an opening at the edge of a willow slough. Steady shooting from 07:00 up to 08:30,, stragglers after that but enough to keep my interest. Finished off with 39 good crows and several possibles. Shot some nice doubles and a triple all with a pump gu...

Dropped a Few More
(Preview)
Out again this morning at first light, 20 or so minutes north of headquarters. Slow start but the task at hand got going... and by 08:05 I had 17 bandits down. Missed a few, all killed with 12 gauge, 1 oz # 7 1/2 shot I/C. Knocked a few more down by 09:00 and was home making a coffee by 10:00. Finished with abou...

Someone said It Was Slow Here...
(Preview)
...so I thought I'd take it upon myself to post some dead crows. Getting out regularly mornings only and getting a bit of shooting. No big numbers as this is not characteristic of spring shooting here but enough to remedy the cabin fever from this past winter. Pics of my blind at sunrise, first crow of th...

Think I found a couple of Crows
(Preview)
Some kids were trying out their snowmobiles near town and scared up these guys near their roost. There were about that many already in the trees around sundown time. New to hunting crows and trying to find their flyway zones. Was just impressed by their numbers and thought I would share.

Scientific evidence that Michigan spring has arrived!
(Preview)
This morning, I drove a whole one mile outside of the city limits to see if I could work off some frustration on our “townies,” who fly about our small town making their racket with impunity inside the city limits where shooting is illegal. I set up behind a friend’s home; a place I had hunted one year ago a...

Some Spring Shooting
(Preview)
Up at zero dark thirty yesterday morning. Drove a short distance north of my home and set up a simple blind. Deeks, caller and I all in place at sunrise. Shot a dozen or so bandits in the next hour and a bit. Missed a few and got a couple nice doubles. Good to be at the crows again. Couple pics of desk at the read...

What A Piece Of Junk Hunt

Earlier this week I was talking with a brother in law and quite naturally the conversation turned to crows. He mentioned that there were a few birds hanging around some fields near a piece of property he hunts. He refers to this particular land owner as "The Junk Collector." The size of t...

Uneducated crows and a trip to the beach.
(Preview)
Turns out that this was to be my last outing for the FEB-MAR MI season, so I went to a couple of favorite spots to see if I could whack a couple of “townies.” A bit cool this a.m., at 9 Deg. F, but had an extra layer on so not too bad with almost zero wind. First setup was just outside the City Limits (again, behin...

My season
(Preview)
I had a very decent season. I did not hunt until after Veterans Day. I ended up with a total of 718 birds on the ground. Heavy snow cover and temps in the teens depleted the numbers toward the end. One of my best days was when I found some moving water in a ditch. It was just a trickle but the birds hit it hard bef...

Hello. I figured there are a few waterfowl hunters here...so, I thought I'd pass on a recall warning for Hevi-Shot products (Hevi-Metal and Hevi-Steel; 12 gauge; 3"). I just got a notice in the mail from Bass Pro Shop explaining that certain lots have defective wads that crack when exposed to fr...

My crow season doesn't start til the 1st of Sept but I got one today. Actually, I tried to avoid it..........didn't work. There were four on the road, when I was driving home from going fishing for trout. Three took off to the left, one took off to the right.......right into my fender. All I saw in the rear...

Calling Strategy

So I went out around 9am saturday as it was raining at daybreak and the forecast said the rain would subside. There was a decent fog out so I figured the high flyers would have to come down. By the time I got set up th fog had burned off and the rain started in again slow at first, I called about 10 to 12 in but...

This morning, I went to a place I've been several times over the past three years. A blueberry field on which the road was finally snow free and safe to drive on without becoming mired. As expected, the birds were their usual educated selves. All that is, except for a pair that by coincidence crash-land...

Well, a disasterous morning. Back to the basics!! If it worked 20 or 30 years ago it still works today. Hunting State land can be tough but it can be done. Went out on Firday and limited out in 1 hour!! Wisconsins daily limit is 15 crows. what a bummer!!!!!!! I had a blast. A perfect ending. -- Edited by gmochty on Monday 23rd of March 2...
