How TRAP SHOOTING got its name.
(Preview)
According to this description and photo, this is how Trap Shooting got its name. I don't know if it's 100% accurate or not. Just thought I would pass it along. Kev <><

PHOTO of crowfight
(Preview)
I was driving along this past Saturday about 1/2 mile from my house. As I passed a group of trees close to the road I could hear many crows screaming, even through the closed windows of my truck. So I turned around and drove back and here are these 2 crows on the ground that were causing all the "crowd...

Rain - better the day before or the day after
(Preview)
As many veterans are aware crows are not as active on rainy days. Many animals have a sense of changing weather and react to it. What is your experience, are they moving more before a rainy day or more the day after the rain, or both.

A shoot like October today (pics)
(Preview)
A great but unexpected shoot today. We hunted in nearby Maine starting in the early morning with a pair of 10ga's. The spring migration was on and we witnessed many very high north bound birds strung out and showing no interest. As the morning wore on we got all the shooting we could handle and we wer...

Patterning Question?
(Preview)
Has anyone ever shot the same piece of paper multiple times then divided the circle into the number of times shot and counted the strikes?
Example
Shoot a paper 4 times. Fold it in half then fold it in half again. When it is opened it would have 4 quarters. Count all strikes in one section and you would...

Hello all
(Preview)
I've been lurking around this site for some time now and thought I should finally join. Things are a bit slow now, as far as a lot of crows (at least for me anyways) as winter is winding down, but should start to heat up soon. I do have the luxury of a year round open season though, so I have that going for me. My...

Old Style Carrylite/Sportplast Crow Decoys with Feet
(Preview)
I'm trying to obtain some of the old style carrylite crow decoys with feet. I don't think they have made them for several years now. I think they were actually made by Sportplast from Italy. These are the ones with the flat foot bases that measure about 5" wide by 2.5" front to back. They w...

What's the strangest things you have found in a crows beak??
(Preview)
Seeing the peanuts in Skips post made me think of this again. What all have y'all found a crow carring. We have found lots of pecans. One had about 10 acorns laying on the ground and in its mouth and the craw was FULL of them. It was so full they fell out when it hit the ground. The strangest thing so far was a ha...

How to measure pattern size?
(Preview)
Do you measure pattern percentage from outside of core to outside of core? Or from farthest flier to farthest flier? I have always used farthest flier but it may make more sense to measure the core of the pattern. Anyone know for sure which is correct.

Long Range shooting
(Preview)
I didn't want to hijack Skip's thread on shot size in regards to long range shooting but I think this relates to the topic. What criteria goes into consistent success at long range? How far do you lead them? Shot and choke size? How do you judge distance? I know I have a comfort zone determined by the size o...

Shot size vs. pellet count vs. choke constriction vs. killing a crow at long distances
(Preview)
This subject continues to be of great interests. We have discussed it before but shedding more daylight on this issue will be worthwhile. Just note above, I said "killing a crow"...not a duck or goose or turkey. Here goes.. Shot size is a bigger issue than choke constriction on being able t...

Shooting Skill
(Preview)
All this debating is informative and fun. I say put a 28 gauge in Skip Woody's hands loaded with any shell you choose and he would out shoot most of us with any gun we own. As I have said it is more who is shooting than what they are shooting. Again some good info, but no one will change their ways will they?

Back to hunting

I had about given up on crows for the moment; our big gang using a landfill has broken up and I presumed that most of the birds were paired up and mating. Took a trip to the river bottom during the afternoon and saw about 40 or so feeding in a field. Returned at daybreak yesterday and killed nine in a howli...

I know this topic was brought up before, but I forgot. I picked up some 12 ga. 1 1/8 oz. 3 dram 1200 fps estates, 7 1/2 and 8's. I did a quick 5 minute R&G mainly to make sure they would eject. Killed 2 and did some rapid fire tests. No problems. I reload, but I get lazy and pick up cheapos for back ups. Anybo...
